Natixis, the French investment bank, is in exclusive talks with Axa to sell its French private equity business, after Axa’s buyout unit made a 507 million euro ($685 million) bid for the assets.

Natixis, which is majority owned by French retail bank BPCE, said Friday that it had signed an exclusivity agreement with Axa Private Equity after the offer, which is 6.6 percent below the portfolio’s market value as of Dec. 31, Bloomberg News reported.

As part of the deal on the table, the current teams overseeing the funds would remain in place and the two firms would jointly raise new funds, Natixis said.

The room bookings on the Palace Estate files have now been published.  Some MPs have been trousering thousands from lobbyists and commercial interests to act as a room booking service.

There is a scratch-my-back, I-scratch-yours aspect to this racket, politicians get paid to advise lobbying firms in a general capacity, they then book rooms for clients of the lobbyists.  It is hard to nail ‘em for this, but Guido will try…

@Fruzion I have to agree. I owned a slider (a Samsung Rant) as a personal phone, and it was a nice phone. But the freezing up, the lack of a good screen and the fact that it was a near-smartphone (a.k.a dumbphone w/better features) meant that things didn't just work. The Bolt Browser was a pain to use on the Rant; it was also hard to use on the WinMo phones my former job provided to me for business. And the WinMo phones, while beautiful because of their flexibility in app use, often just didn't work (unlike my Vista-based laptop which, despite all the hate for Vista, just does the job).

I've toyed with Android phones; most are just plain ugly (save for anything from HTC that isn't called G1 or Nexus One; they are the bomb in terms of design). The apps are cool, but I don't use many apps save for Bolt, WordPress and UberTwitter; most of the apps are just toys to me and sort of meaningless (and the key word here, is for me; I greatly appreciate how others are in love with apps). The iPhone always seemed more show pony than workhorse to me (I also hated the lack of cut/copy-and-paste). As for the Pre: Undoubtedly beautiful, but the keyboard just plain sucks; the keys are way to small for even my long, thin piano-player fingers.

The Curve, which I just got two weeks ago, is the atomic bomb. The design is sexy but not fussy; the keyboard is great for one- or two-hand typing; the screen is neither too big nor too small for my tastes; and the OS works like a business-oriented phone OS is supposed to work. I haven't been this excited about a smartphone ever (and I even considered buying a Pre and an iPhone when each initially came out) — and haven't been as excited about a phone since I got the Rant (which, among the feature phones, remains better than the Rumor/Exclaim crap out there).

The browser needs work (this is why I have Bolt) and I do wish RIM would allow for apps to embed on the MicroSD instead of the phone (better memory allocation). And I can understand why some would want RIM to push for more app development and redesign the UI (the OS is perfect). But RIM isn't meant for fun. It's for getting things done. Fun is why I own a Flip Mono, an iRiver, an iPod Touch and an XBox 360.

Last week, Facebook was affected by a glitch that sent what appear to be thousands of private messages to the wrong people — a very alarming security breach given the amount of data 400 million users have entrusted to the service. News of the bug hit the press, Facebook issued a typically vague statement saying very few people were affected and that an investigation was looking into the matter, and that was that.

Most people probably just shrugged their shoulders at the news, but it’s yet another blemish against the company’s security record. This isn’t the first time Facebook has run into security issues, and I’ve grown increasingly concerned that the company might be playing fast and loose with its quality assurance policies because it doesn’t want to sacrifice the rapid iteration it’s famous for.  With this in mind, I reached out to Facebook late last week to ask about their protocol for deploying code and how the bug made it through in the first place. The company responded to some of my questions, and refused to answer others.

At least, Facebook eventually answered some of my questions. At first, the company sent me a vague statement reiterating that they were investigating the issue, and that they “maintain industry-leading quality assurance and security systems, and the reliability of Facebook is our top priority.”

In response, I reminded the Facebook spokesperson that it had just sent thousands of messages to people who weren’t meant to receive them, which would seem to indicate that it is not, in fact, on the bleeding edge of online security. I restated my questions and the company got back to me with this more detailed overview of its QA and code deployment policies, found below. Note that it begins with a general statement Facebook provided, along with more direct answers to my questions (which are in bold).

Facebook hires the most qualified and highly-skilled engineers we can find – most from industry or from top universities. Upon joining the company, every engineer and engineering manager participates in a six-week intensive ‘boot camp’ training. Our code review process is rigorous, and we phase out changes and test them before they go live for real users to detect any potential issues. During code pushes, our engineering, user support, and operations teams work cross-functionally to monitor the state of the push and to identify any problems early. We also have the capability to quickly push code updates to all of our datacenters worldwide, and to enable or disable critical features of the site if there is a problem.

All of these checks worked together on Wednesday, as designed, to limit the impact of the error and stopped it within minutes. We were able to swiftly disable access to the users who received messages and remove those messages from Facebook, although we were unable to prevent email notifications from being sent to affected users. It is important to recognize that no system is perfect and no company avoids mistakes all of the time. However, we would like to take this opportunity to sincerely apologize to all affected users and ensure them that we are committed to investigating Wednesday’s issue and to learning from it.

What are your protocols for pushing code?

We have staged rollout changes that go through multiple phases before going to end users, so we can proactively detect any problems. As the changes get rolled out to users, a set of support, engineering, and operation leaders are actively engaged to monitor the state of the push. As soon as any issue is identified, we have multiple tools to quickly disable critical features. The combination of these mechanisms dramatically limited the exposure related to Wednesday’s issue.

Are there multiple people reviewing all code that gets pushed?

Yes, we have a rigorous code review process and no code goes live on the site unless it has been reviewed and approved by a skilled engineer.

What changes are you making to ensure that this does not happen again?

We cannot discuss specific improvements, but we take privacy and security very seriously and are continually improving our code standards, processes, and systems to help us build high quality products quickly.

When do you expect to conclude your investigation, because I will certainly be following up for the details about it?

As a general practice, we do not comment on investigations like this.

While interesting, none of this is particularly surprising. And because Facebook isn’t commenting on the outcome of the investigation, we’ll probably never find out what caused the bug (or if company protocol was even followed in this case).  But hey, at least they say they’re doing the right things.

It’s worth pointing out that Facebook is by no means the only company affected by such issues.  Last year, I wrote a post called the Sorry State of Online Privacy, where I detailed some of the security lapses that had hit Facebook, Twitter, and Google (and of course there’s the recent Google Buzz fiasco). All of these companies would likely claim to have state of the art testing and security measures, yet such problems seem to pop up every few months.  I’m aware that it’s impossible to have a fully secure system, but that doesn’t mean engineering teams should be treating these problems as inevitabilities.  To reiterate what I wrote last year, the word ‘private’ should not mean “this will remain hidden until we accidentally break something”.

Open Identity Exchange (OIX) is a newly founded non-profit organization, launched today at the RSA Conference 2010 by Google, PayPal, Equifax, VeriSign, Verizon, CA and Booz Allen Hamilton. The aim of this new organization is exchange of online identity credentials across public and private sectors; in other words, it can certify online identity providers to U.S. federal standards.

OIX is not to be confused with OpenID, which is a standard that lets sites such as Google, Twitter or Facebook share the same login credentials. U.S. Government sites require a trust framework, a certification system that enables a party who accepts a digital identity credential to trust the identity, security and privacy policies of the party who issues the credential. OIX is the first Open Identity Trust Framework provider, enabling certified sites to share their login credentials with U.S. Government sites.

“OIX grew out of a public/private industry partnership initiated by the U.S. government at this conference last year. OpenID and Information Card technologies can solve the technical problem of using identity credentials across different websites, but can’t solve the problem of how those credentials can be trusted at different levels of assurance. OIX is a solution to this problem not just for the U.S. government, but for many different governments, industry alliances, non-profit associations, telcos, academic networks, and others all over the world who need to establish trust across a wide online population,” said Don Thibeau, OIDF Executive Director and OIX Board Chair.

Today, OIX has certified Google, PayPal and Equifax (with Verizon awaiting certification) to issue digital identity credentials that will be accepted for registration and login at U.S. government websites. Of course, this will be implemented gradually; the first site to accept OIX credentials for login is the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

Read more about OIX at the official site.

Have you checked out the new BMW's? The ultimate driving machine has a new model coming out this spring, the 1-series. It's a less expensive version of the 3-series. The new M3 and the X6 are also making their debut. And take a look at those cobalt blue-looking eyes on the new 5- series that seem to follow you and actually turn while you drive. Awesome! (www.stltoday.com)

I have to confess that I have been a huge fan of German cars ever since I owned my first Volkswagen Beetle. It was a 1970's Super Beetle. Although it was kind of like a toy that you had to tinker with, (a cable running under the floorboard kept shorting out and the battery underneath the rear seat was a problem) I loved zipping around in the little “pregnant roller-skate.” You had to be careful though taking it on the highway during high winds as you might end up making a lane change that you really didn't want to make. I've had a total of four Volkswagens, two Audi's, and one BMW in my lifetime.

My first experience with a BMW was when I was in college and rode in one that my friend Craig owned. Craig was a macho type with craggy features, muscular build, and a square jaw. He was a jock who liked to party and was rather fond of the ladies. I'm sure that he thought the car would be a chick magnet, and it was. The first time I rode with him in it there were all kinds of women waving and whistling at us. Once two of them had a discussion in a parking lot as to whether we were driving a new one or not. We weren't, it was pretty old. I guess that difference in income did make a difference.

So at that time I swore that I would get one of my own. I ended up buying a 5-series that was about 6 years old at the time, but it was a beautiful looking car. I named him Hans. He was definitely a Hans. The first thing that I did was spruce Hans up a bit. Bought him four new struts and some new Pirelli tires. Went to a detailer and had him super cleaned and the leather seats reconditioned. A friend of mine called it my “James Bond” car because it had so many gadgets including things like heated door locks and something like twelve lights in the interior.

The other thing that I liked about the car was when you took it into a dealership for service it didn't matter that you were driving an “old” BMW. The dealer I went to had a customer lounge with cushy seating and a coffee bar. You could pas the time while browsing the inventory, look the latest BMW accessories, or do some shopping at the boutique. There was even a computer kiosk and WiFi capability throughout the building. You could also watch BMW videos on a 46″ flat screen. When I drove up to the service department, the mechanic asked me: “So, what's wrong with HIM?” Well Hans has been a little hard to start lately and I heard him cough the other day.” I waited in the customer lounge like an anxious parent.

Alas the story of Hans is a tragic one. One night as I was driving home from work a lady ran a stoplight and I ran into her full force at about 50 miles an hour. I walked away unscathed. To this day I think that Han's superior construction saved my live. But Hans didn't survive. He was totaled. He gave his life for me.

But there is a happy ending to the story. My friend Jim had always been a Honda head. When he learned about Hans he bought him as salvage and gave the car to his father-in-law, who owned a body shop. It took him over a year to rebuild him but Hans looked even better than ever when he was finally finished and my friend drove him for another 100,000 miles before trading him in on a new, you guessed it, Bimmer.

    Good morning

PBC Supercar Weekend 2009 by UN1SON

You really have to hand it to Chevrolet; by sticking to the old American standard of “bigger equals better”, they've created a high performance monster. Powered by the LS7 V8 engine, the Corvette Z06 boasts 505 stock horsepower with a varying price tag of around $80,000. It's not the cost or power of the machine that make it worth writing about, but the combination of the two.

The Z06 is the 'poor'-man's supercar; it's loaded with an enormous seven liter V8, all-wheel drive, and a fine tuned six-speed manual transmission. It sticks to the road just as well as an F430, and arguably, a lot better than many larger engine supercars. This isn't to say that the Z06 is faster than an Aston Martin or Ferrari; it's just that no one expected a car priced under a hundred grand to outperform the traditional leaders of the pack on any level, and that's exactly what the Z06 does. In fact, a souped up version known as the Blue Devil Z06 recently ran Nurburgring with a time of 7:40, setting the second fastest time behind only the Porsche Carrera GT at 7:32. The Italians have taken notice, and the Lamborghini LP640, a 640 horsepower version of the Murceilago, is already on sale and Ferrari will be debuting the F430 Scuderia this coming autumn. It won't be topping the lists for long, but the success of the Z06 was a surprise to everyone, and for good reason.

There's a lot to love about the Z06; the low growl of the engine, the seamless shifting, the way it commands the road – it's hard to believe that GM would ever allow this All-American legend and their flagship supercar to succumb to their biggest flaw, but General Motors never ceases to fail in this respect. The only luxury you get is the seating, and they aren't even that great. You don't even get a sporty steering wheel, just a Corvette-badged Cobalt wheel. This isn't necessarily terrible, it's just that one expects a little more than plastic and cheap leather when the cost is so high. There are some nifty aftermarket solutions, but that really doesn't excuse this lack of effort on the manufacturer's part. Part of owning a supercar or luxury vehicle is that it feels like that way; the Z06 should not feel like an $18,000 dollar Chevy, and that eighty grand should go to more than just an LS7.

Despite the lack of interior, the Chevrolet Corvette Z06 is truly a marvel and a bargain. It costs a lot less than similarly performing cars, it comes with a warranty worth considering, and it's simply a hell of a lot of fun to drive. Sure, it's no Gallardo and certainly not an Enzo, but if you're reading this article, you're looking for the highest possible speed at the lowest possible price. Having been fortunate to take most of the cars mentioned in this piece for test-drives, I guarantee that the Z06 is the only car that is worth more than the sum of its parts – if you aren't allergic to plastic.

    Good evening

    Good evening

For 2008, the German car company, Audi has introduced their first mid-engine supercar, the Audi R8. This supercar Audi R8 has an exotic aluminum space frame feature, and a mid-mounted compact V8 engine that can produce 420 horsepower that located behind the passenger compartment. A clear Lexan covers over the engine with LED lighting to show the engine off is the most stunning feature of this fabulous car. The car's skin is efficiently aerodynamic, with its underbody diffuser creates downforce to keep this car on the ground while it reach its top speed of 187 miles per hour. Audi claims that the car will accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.4 seconds, this is about a third of a second behind the Lamborghini Gallardo.

The R8 has every comfort aspects of a luxury car, including an excellent legroom, navigation system, a 12-speaker for its 465-watt sound system. All of that make this car so comfortable. There's also a decent luggage space under the hood in front, and a lot of space behind the seats that make this car can be loaded with some stuffs when the passengers is on a traveling trip.

This car offers two transmissions, a six-speed manual and a version of the Audi/VW Direct Shift Gearbox with high-tech six-speed called R-Tronic. If there's speed, then there's brake, the brakes are race-worthy, and a bit sensitive at slow speeds. The shock absorbers of this car can adjust to the road conditions, and you can set the ride in two modes, Comfort and Sport.

This car is powered by Audi's venerable 4.2 liter V8, uses the high-revving 420 horsepower version where you can found in the RS4. The engine is located in the back. In high RPMs, the engine usually shows its best performance, but R8 make you reach 3,000 RPM at just 15 MPH in 1 st.

    Malus ? c'est quoi ?

    metadces » 21 February 2010 » In Uncategorized » No Comments

    Hello !

    Définition assurance malus

Unusual car accident - zoomed in by net_efekt
